What’s in a name? A lot apparently, judging by Greece's move to block a Macedonian Air Transport plane from using its airspace. Macedonian Air is the national carrier for Macedonia, one of the now-independent nations that had made up Yugoslavia. The Associated Press notes Greece and Macedonia "have been arguing for many years over the name Macedonia."
AP says the Greeks fear "the name Macedonia implies territorial claims to its own province with the same name. Talks aimed at resolving the dispute remain deadlocked at the United Nations, prompting Greece to block Macedonia's bid to join NATO during its summit (earlier) this month."
And now the Greeks appear to have taken that dispute to the skies. Their move to block Macedonian Air flight forced the Egypt-bound flight to divert to Turkey, according to AP. "We ask that politics remains politics, and business remains business," says Ivica Bocevski, a Macedonian government spokesman. "Of course, Macedonia will use every means at its disposal to protect the Macedonian carrier."
